The Assam Tea Experience:
world domination
Assam tea gardens were planted around the height of the British empire. The boldness and strength of that era are carried through in Assam teas like ours to this very day. Tasting Notes:
malty, bold, spicy
In general, Assam teas are prized for their powerful, malty flavors. Our single-estate Assam tea delivers with a deep, bittersweet, malt-heavy aroma and flavor, balanced with hints of spice (think: cardamom) and fruit (think: apple). Ingredients:
Black tea from the Mokalbari estate in Assam, India Savoring Your Experience:
Assam tea has abundant tannins. Tannins are a naturally occurring compound in many black teas, and they give it the briskness that you'd find in most English tea and Irish tea blends. It's this briskness makes Assam tea ideal for rounding out with a bit of milk and sugar. So if you like milk and sugar in your tea, carry on and enjoy our Assam!
Assam tea is traditionally paired with hearty breakfasts and rich afternoon tea fare in England, and is often used in iced teas and "bubble teas" in Taiwan.
Unlike teabags of English tea blends and Irish tea blends, our Assam can be enjoyed for three infusions. Re-steep as desired! Fun Facts:
The vast majority of Assam teas are produced for teabags or for a low-grade tea known as CTC tea. However, a few estates make limited runs of so-called "orthodox teas" like this one. Mokalbari (where our single-estate Assam tea was grown) is one such estate.
Those who are familiar with single-estate Indian teas may notice that "bari" is a popular sound in estate names. "Bari" means farm, garden or grove, and the name Mokalbari refers to the grove of thick-trunked bamboo trees that was on the land prior to the tea garden's planting back in 1876.
